Willie Young will be UEFA’s refereeing observer at Wednesday’s u-19 Champions League tie between Celtic and Barcelona at Cappielow.

The former grade one official is now a star turn on the after dinner circuit amusing audiences with tales about his refereeing incompetence which often involves jokes about not giving Celtic decisions and red carding Celtic players.

According to the TMC Entertainment website Young is: “A successful lawyer and former referee, Willie is an accomplished wit, raconteur and established after dinner speaker.

He is in demand for engagements all over the UK. Willie has spoken at numerous business and sporting dinners and at scores of Burns suppers large and small, from Cumnock to Cairo. He has delivered Immortal Memories in places as diverse as Kenya, Abu Dhabi and Dubai.”

One of Young’s worst ever performance’s came at the start of the 96/97 season when Rangers (IL) were chasing their ninth title.

Before half time Tosh McKinlay had been red carded for two fairly innocent ‘offences’.

Afterwards an Ajax scout who had been sent over to spy of Walter Smith’s side claimed that it had been a wasted journey because of the performance of the referee.

Martin Lundby of Norway will referee the match which kicks off at 2pm at Cappielow.
