Celtic have stepped up their efforts to bring Darlington Nagbe to the club.

According to a report in The Sun significant progress has been made to sign the Portland Timbers midfielder.

Nagbe was a guest of Celtic at the recent Champions League match against Barcelona after the club received impressive reports from the MLS.

The report in The Sun claims that a fee of £3m would be required but that seems on the high side for a 26-year-old who hasn’t played outside of the US.

Nagbe was born in Liberia but left after five months for Europe where his dad played in France, Switzerland and Greece before the family settled in the USA.

His international career came to a halt under Jurgen Klinsmann but it’s believed that he’ll be back in favour with the return of Bruce Arena.

Brendan Rodgers has identified central midfield as an area that he would like to strengthen in January, preferably with a Champions League quality player.

It’s doubtful if Nagbe fits the bill on that criteria but the interest in the Portland Timbers midfielder does seem genuine.
