Alex Rae’s double standards

Listeners to Radio Clyde’s Super Scoreboard programme on Monday would have heard a fierce case being put up by Alex Rae against players having the right to appeal against ordering off decisions.

Scott Brown’s appeal against being sent off against Ross County seemed to have upset the former St Mirren boss who recently lost out on the chance to become number three to Pedro Caixinha at Ibrox.

Rae’s stance seems to have changed radically from his playing days when he appealed against a five match ban handed out for kicking an opponent on the head!

Fortunately for the man who was enticed to Ibrox by an EBT of £569,000 the referee missed the incident during the 2-1 defeat against CSKA Moscow in 2004.

UEFA used television evidence to hand out a five match ban which Rae and Rangers (IL) appealed against with the hearing coming two days before the return leg which was a 1-1 draw sending the old club crashing into the UEFA Cup.

Following the failed appeal the BBC reported the club explaining: “Rangers FC can confirm that a delegation from the club, including Alex Rae and legal representation, attended a UEFA appeal hearing in Geneva.

“A great deal of work had gone into preparing our challenge, including a submission on Friday, and following Uefa’s late request for the player to attend.

The club has no further comment on this matter and our collective focus is now on the important week ahead.”

Explaining his actions Rae said: “The ball was actually there and he put his head down between my foot and the ball.

“It looked worse than it was, without a doubt. No action was taken by the referee.”

Rae is a regular contributor to Radio Clyde Superscoreboard and Radio Scotland’s Sportsound programmes.
