Celtic look set to receive a massive cash boost from the sale of Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutch defender left the hoops for Southampton in August 2015 in a deal reported to be worth between £10-13m.

More importantly a sell on clause was inserted with van Dijk expected to become one of the biggest transfer deals of the summer.

It’s unclear what percentage Celtic have on a transfer or whether it applies to the whole fee or profit but with a world record fee for a defender expected Brendan Rodgers could find his transfer kitty getting a £6m boost.

Last summer Rodgers spent less than £5m on transfer fees putting his treble chasers together.

Yesterday Southampton chief Ralph Krueger claimed that they could turn down an offer of £60m for the defender but according to a report in the Telegraph talks are already underway to take van Dijk to Chelsea.

The Telegraph claim: “Southampton have claimed they do not need to sell Van Dijk, who is believed to favour a move to Chelsea, but talks have taken place in private about getting a fee in excess of the £50m Paris Saint-Germain paid for David Luiz in 2014 which remains the world record for a defender.

Van Dijk is Chelsea’s top central defensive target, ahead of Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte who turned down a move to Manchester City 12 months ago.

Chelsea have plenty of players they could offer to both Everton and Southampton, on loan and permanently, to try to help clinch deals for Lukaku and Van Dijk.”

Celtic signed van Dijk from Groningen in 2013 for £2.5m.
