The Scotsman breaks the mould

On Friday afternoon the first signs of a break in the dam appeared from an unlikely source.

Out of left left field The Scotsman provided a platform for Stephen McIlkenny to state the case for a thorough review of the SFA and how they dealt with a decade of cheating from Rangers use of EBT’s.

There was barely a point raised in ‘Opinion: Stephen McIlkenny on why SFA review is necessary for real change’ that could be disputed.

Claiming that the in-house Nimmo Smith enquiry is beyond questioning is a clear nonsense. It has all the legal status of the quarterly report from a Neighbourhood Watch Committee.

Somewhere I read someone explaining that they are glad that the Hillsborough Justice Committee didn’t take the same view about an in-house whitewash.

After Celtic published details of their correspondence with the SFA Regan knew that he was under pressure.

Highlighting the ‘one club’ line was dutifully reported after his round of interviews on Monday lunchtime.

There was barely a critical comment following those interviews, no one asked about Andrew Dickson and how easily, or willingly the SFA had been duped over the 2011 licence given to Rangers.

Perhaps Dickson’s presence on the Licence Committee had an influence, perhaps his return to the SFA Congress makes him as conflicted as Campbell Ogilvie once was.

After publishing McIlkenny’s opinion piece the Scotsman then published a poll giving readers the chance to vote on whether there should be a review. The result was overwhelmingly in favour.

Yesterday The Scotsman covered the protest from Hibs fans against their board of directors at Easter Road.

There’s a big market out there for mainstream coverage of the story- it remains to be seen if The Scotsman Pulications will start to question the SFA with the mountain of correspondence available through social media.
