Chris Sutton has blamed Gordon Strachan’s early team selections for Scotland’s World Cup exit.

The introduction of Leigh Griffiths and Stuart Armstrong at home to Slovenia in March sparked a turnaround with six Celtic players playing in the double header against Lithuania and Malta.

Injuries to Armstrong and Scott Brown forced Strachan to change his side but when the final whistle blew tonight in Slovenia Callum McGregor and James Forrest were left sitting on the bench with Kieran Tierney substituted.

Three consecutive wins put Scotland in pole position to clinch a play-off place which was guaranteed yesterday when Bosnia lost to Belgium.

Griffiths gave Scotland the lead midway through the first half but a double from Roman Bezjak ended the hopes of the Tartan Army even though Robert Snodgrass equalised in the 87th minute.

Slovakia finished in second place and will now have to wait until Tuesday night to find out if they will reach the play-off’s.
