Bayern Munich are expected to appoint Jupp Heynckes as caretaker manager until the end of the season.

The 72-year-old has been out of football for four years but will be brought out of retirement to pick up the pieces from Carlo Ancelotti who was sacked a week ago.

DW.com reports: “The 72-year-old Heynckes will take the reins at Bayern for the fourth time, his most recent tenure being in 2013 when he led the side to the Champions League title as well as the Bundesglia crown and German Cup. After winning the treble, Heynckes had said he would be ending his coaching career.

According to the tabloid daily Bild, he will take over from Carlo Ancelotti for the rest of this season. Ancelotti was fired last week after a string of poor results, culminating in a Champions League defeat at Paris Saint-Germain. Ancelotti’s assistant Willy Sagnol had filled in as a temporary coach until Bayern’s top brass were able to name a more permanent replacement.”

Ancelotti was sacked on the back of a 3-0 Champions League defeat from Paris Saint Germain and reports that key players were disillusioned by the training methods of the Italian coach.

At the weekend Willy Sagnol was in charge away to Hertha Berlin but watched his side throw away a two goal lead to draw with a side in the bottom half of the table.

Adding to their woes Franck Ribery suffered a knee injury that is expected to see him sidelined until the new year.

The draw at Hertha sees Bayern drop six points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund with all eyes on the Bundesliga clash with Freiburg which falls four days before the visit of Celtic.
