Callum McGregor believes that Celtic have a new striker in Leigh Griffiths.

A year ago the former Wolves man was sitting on the sidelines injured as Moussa Dembele scored for fun.

It looked like a long unlikely road back for Griffiths with Brendan Rodgers going public with his concerns over the strikers’ dedication and repeated injury issues in the new year.

McGregor’s own career has came on leaps and bounds during 2017 but with Griffiths now Celtic’s undisputed first choice striker it’s the 27-year-old that is picking up most attention.

“He is like a different player,” McGregor told the Evening Times about his team-mate. “He has just gone to a different level over the last couple of months.

“His confidence is sky-high at the minute but even when you take out the goals his overall play and his link up play are excellent. He has shown that he is more than capable of going out and performing at the very top level.”

Griffiths will carry the scoring burden for Scotland this week as they attempt to salvage a place in the World Cup Play Offs.

McGregor was belatedly called into the squad following injuries but has little chance of being involved against Slovakia on Thursday night.

Brendan Rodgers will monitor the fitness of Scott Brown and Stuart Armstrong during the internatiional break and hope that there is no more knocks to his players ahead of the match with Bayern Munich.
