Alves blow for Sevco

Sevco look like being left with Bruno Alves after the transfer window closes.

The defender lasted less than 20 minutes of the 0-0 draw with Celtic and headed straight to Portugal for treatment on a mystery injury.

Alves was given a two year deal when he signed from Cagliari in the summer and was announced as one of Pedro Caixinha’s five captains.

With the full reality of the summer spending spree reflected on the balance sheet Sevco would love to move the 36-year-old off the wage bill but that now looks highly unlikely/.

Asked about the fitness of Alves, Graeme Murty told The Sun: “He is staying in Portugal. He has a significant problem or disruption with his calf so he won’t be in America.

He will receive treatment in Portugal. I have no real timescale on how long he might be out for. I will have a closer brief with our medical staff over the coming days.”

Alves has made little difference to the Sevco defence with his laboured performances being highlighted and exploited by opponents.

When he arrived in the summer he was billed as the cure for the club’s defensive problems but within half a dozen matches he had become another of them.
