Marvin Compper knows that some Celtic fans are questioning the signing of a 32-year-old.

The RB Leipzig defender was signed up last month with Brendan Rodgers identifying central defence as the priority area in his team.

Compper was a regular last season as Leipzig stormed their way to a Champions League place but has barely featured in their side this season.

That could leave him short of sharpness to some folk but by the sounds of it the former Hoffenheim and Fiorentina defender is raring to get started.

When you’ve still got the legs, when you’re still in shape and still have the experience it’s a good mix,” he stated to The Sun. “I hope I can keep up my fitness as long as possible. That mix and balance can give me my best two or three years.

I think I’m in good shape, but I can be in better shape because I had a longer break than the others. It’s not about proving myself abroad, I’ve done that already in my career and I don’t have to show others.

I came here to improve and to contribute to the new team whatever my role is. That is all that drives me.”

Compper is expected to make his debut against Brechin City in the Scottish Cup on Saturday with Rodgers keen to get the mix right in central defence.

Kris Ajer and Dedryck Boyata are the likely partners with Erik Sviatchenko on his way on loan to Midtjylland this morning.

Compper won’t be eligible for the Europa League after playing for RB Leipzig against Besiktas in the Champions League.
