Ally McCoist has talked up the dream of Mike Asley bankrolling a Sevco title bid.

The sportswear tycoon was an original investor in the tribute act alongside McCoist and Charles Green in 2012.

During the 2014/15 season a fan led boycott of club merchandise contributed to Dave King’s concert party take-over.

Directors associated with Ashley were literally driven out of town as the people welcomed the South African based criminal up the marble staircase.

King has failed to deliver on any of his promises with some Sevco fans looking towards Newcastle where Ashley is looking to sell the club for upwards of £300m.

Speaking to Alan Brazil on TalkSPORT this morning McCoist said: “I think that the fans would get behind anyone that will come in and invests in the club.

Obviously Dave King would have a major say in that because he is still currently there, I genuinely don’t think that there is a massive ill feeling towards Mike Ashley.

I think what Mike Ashley was attempting to do at ‘Rangers’ was make the best of a situation for himself which for a businessman he has done throughout his life.

I think there’s a lot of the Rangers support that would welcome somebody coming in with finance who would want to invest in the team and the club.”

After a decade at Newcastle, Ashley has realised that there is no profit to be made from football clubs with his main interest the merchandise and retail areas.

Newcastle have been run on an even keel over the last few years, spending the money that is generated and losing out to big spending rivals.

Having tried to install that ethos at Ibrox through Derek Llambias it’s unlikely that Ashley will be putting his business at the mercy of campaigns from the Sons of Struth and the Daily Record who leaked details of his Ibrox contracts.
