Celtic’s players hit out at the plastic pitch of Rugby Park after watching Dedryck Boyata and Kris Ajer get injured in the 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock.

Boyata struck the ground in frustration in the eighth minute after he suffered a groin injury tangling with Eamonn Brophy for the ball.

Nir Bitton was sent into central defence to replace the Belgian with another change following soon afterwards when Kris Ajer picked up an ankle injury.

Speaking to Radio Scotland after the match Brendan Rodgers said: “The players were complaining afterwards about the two guys.

The types of injuries that you can pick up here are predominantly knees, groins and ankles. One (of our injuries) is an ankle injury, one is a groin.

I will find out tomorrow from the medical team how they are. One is groin (Boyata) and one is ankle (Ajer). Obviously Jozo Simunovic is fine, he can’t play on an astroturf pitch which is why he didn’t play today

We spoke about it (the pitch) before the game and I’ve always said it that you never see a good game on here.”

Boyata looks certain to miss out on both legs of the Europa League ties against Zenit St Petersburg with Ajer a major doubt.

That leaves Rodgers with Jack Hendry and Jozo Simunovic to go with over the next couple of weeks.

Celtic now have a full week to prepare for the Scottish Cup tie with Partick Thistle with a head count of the injured players likely on Monday morning.
