Barry Ferguson has claimed that Sevco must be mental to turn down a bid of £7.5m for Alfredo Morelos.

Some cynics would argue that you must be hard of thinking to believe that an offer of that magnitude was ever made for the Columbian striker.

Ferguson has followed the drama closely in the Daily Record and listened to the soothing management talk of Graeme Murty.

The original story was fanciful enough but since it broke it has been embellished with claims that the fee would be paid up front and that Morelos would be picking up £70,000/week in wages.

There are some signs that the mainstream media are breaking ranks with the yarn with the original kick that Sevco were a cash rich club now giving way to the reality and fall out of the latest Ibrox moonbeam.

Writing in the Record Ferguson admitted: “But – and this is a big but – if the sort of money being bandied about in terms of transfer fees and wages is close to being accurate then Rangers must be mental not to do the deal.

The last we were told it was around £7.5m. All paid up front. And with wages of more than £60,000 a week for the player.

I find those numbers incredible. And I find it difficult to understand why Rangers turned them down. In fact I’m simply not having it.

Maybe in time we’ll get a fuller picture of the proposal that came from China before the transfer window shut at midnight on Wednesday. But as things stand right now it’s not just Morelos who has been left confused by it all.”

Ferguson added: “But there comes a point when it becomes an absolute no brainer which is why I find it hard to accept Rangers’ stance is the right one.

“As soon as the numbers started to rise above £6m it made no sense to keep hold of him because I don’t think he’s done enough in the game to be considered worth that kind of money. So when it hits £7.5m you drive the guy to the airport to march him on to the first flight to Beijing.

“In six months you’ve turned a huge profit on a player who only cost £1m in the summer. I’m amazed anyone would say no to that.”

A look at the Sevco accounts and Dave King’s criminal record in South Africa should help Ferguson get over his confusion.
