Derk Boerrigter has denied being involved in a pyramid system related to the digital currency Bitcoin.

There has been a ‘wealth’ of publicity surrounding the currency which has fluctuated wildly attracting speculators.

Boerrigter joined Celtic in 2013 with the nickname of Sick Note and after a sparkling 25 minutes on his debut against Ross County had to limp off.

Appearances became less and less frequent with Celtic believed to be paying around £17,000 per week for the former Ajax winger.

Speaking about Bitconnect to Dutch website Quote Net he said: “I have invested in Bitconnect, there was a suggestion that I had lost a lot of money, but that is not the case at all. I was called at once by all friends and acquaintances who were worried, but I got off in time.

I got involved through an old teammate of mine, Jef Meinderink, whom I still know from the youth academy of FC Twente. I still had him as a friend on Facebook and saw him post a lot of things about Bitconnect. I was also interested in Bitcoins and how it all works on the crypto market, so I had just sent him a message how he was doing.”

During his time at Celtic he applied his entrepreneurial touch by launching a collection of designer belts but seemed to spend more time on social media and enjoying the Glasgow scene that tearing up the training ground

Boerrigter started just seven matches in total for Celtic before completing his three year contract and returning to Holland with his career over at the age of 30.
