How have Celtic’s January signings fared?

We are always told how difficult the January transfer market is, generally 95% of activity takes place in 5% of the available time.

It arrives with a whoosh, perhaps one early deal completed, followed then by loads of speculation before a frantic scan at airports and hospitals to see if anything is actually happening.

A mini exodus was expected at Celtic but a crippling injury list put paid to that idea with only Liam Henderson being sold to Bari and Kundai Benyu going out on loan to Oldham taking place.

Celtic’s target will always be to compete in the group phase of the Champions League but this January there was a sadly brief spell in the Europa League. Tellingly when Celtic crashed out to Zenit St Petersburg none of the January signings were involved.

By the time he gets around to preparing for next season’s Champions League qualifiers Rodgers will be hoping that the January intake have picked up a couple of winners medals as well as the demands and expectations of the club.

The expectations only ever go in one direction, supporters won’t reign in their ambitions which makes the demands of a January signing all the higher.

SCOTT BAIN

A week can be a lifetime in football.

Arriving to sign in the kit of your previous club isn’t perhaps the best idea but Bain stood firm at Ibrox and will forever have the gratitude of the Celtic support.

While the other lot wondered ‘what’s the goalie dain’ our third choice cool, calm and the rest as he collected Alfredo Morelos’ sitter off the post.

There are a lot of variables over where Bain will be playing next season but all of a sudden a problem position has been resolved leaving everyone wondering what the fuss was about.

JACK HENDRY

Hendry has had a less dramatic time than his former Dundee team-mate but that is no less impressive.

Sent on to fire fight following red cards at Aberdeen and Sevco the 22-year-old hasn’t put a foot wrong as vital Premiership points were collected.

Getting a game in central defence could be a problem but he is clearly a reliable right-back and should be a goal threat at set pieces if he improves on his performance at Motherwell.

MARVIN COMPPER

This one is becoming a bit of a mystery.

The first signing of the January window was struck by the injury curse after joining his new team-mates for training in Dubai.

His recovery took longer than anticipated followed by an unconvincing debut at home to Morton in the Scottish Cup meant that he had to baby sit for Leigh Griffiths at Ibrox.

Dismantling the partnership of Dedryck Boyata and Kris Ajer looks a tough ask during the closing weeks of the season with trophies at stake.

CHARLY MUSONDA

What a frenzy there was to sign the Chelsea kid, his first touch against Hearts on his debut hinted at magic.

Kilmarnock and St Johnstone provided the ‘Welcome to Scotland’ signs with Musonda struggling alongside his team-mates.

There was a moment of magic when he set up Callum McGregor to score against Zenit St Petersburg but recent appearances have been fleeting.

A lot will be expected at the start of next season.

LEWIS MORGAN

Barely had time for a photo shoot before he was back to Paisley and helping St Mirren’s promotion bid.

He has been less high profile in recent weeks but it’s obvious why Jack Ross insisted on a loan deal as part of any transfer package.

This week he’ll be on Scotland u-21 duty, despite Celtic’s winger problems getting to complete the season in the Championship looks like the right decision for his development.
