John Beaton was at the centre of another refereeing controversy last night as St Johnstone drew 1-1 with Hibs.

The Edinburgh side had goalkeeper Ofir Marciano correctly sent off early in the match but thereafter Beaton barely got a decision right.

The same referee was in charge of Celtic’s recent 0-0 draw with St Johnstone where there seemed to be a rota among the visitors to take players out of the game with just one yellow card produced in the first 75 minutes.

Last night Blair Alston produced a brutal assault on John McGinn that shocked the BT Sport commentary team with no pretence made of going for the ball. Alston was booked.

Lennon on Hibs TV: Scandalous challenges, some of it was borderline reckless, some of it was grotesque.

Speaking at the post match media conference Lennon told The Sun: ““I don’t understand how St Johnstone have finished that game with 11 men.

I totally get that our red card was deserved but some of the challenges on our players in the second half were shocking, disgraceful tackles.

We didn’t get enough protection. The Alston one is a red card, all day long. He’s made no attempt to play the ball and he’s been reckless and endangered John’s well-being.”

Last night’s draw leaves Hibs a point behind Aberdeen in fourth place although they now have three matches against teams in the bottom half of the table before the Premiership split.
