Owen Coyle has resigned as manager of Ross County after just 22 matches.

The former Bolton boss took over from Jim McIntyre at the end of September but leaves with the Dingwall side three points adrift at the bottom of the Premiership table.

Coyle managed just four wins and five draws in charge with a disastrous run of defeats before Christmas taking them to the bottom of the table.

Speaking to the County website Coyle said: “Myself and the Chairman had a chat on Monday and after some reflective thought I felt for the good of Ross County – and the challenging situation with my family being in England – it was in everyone’s best interests for me to offer my resignation, which the Chairman duly accepted.”

Last week chairman Roy McGregor was fully behind his manager when interviewed by Andy Walker and Kris Commons on Sky Sports but a 2-0 defeat at St Johnstone on Saturday seems to have been the final straw.

County are scheduled to play Partick Thistle on Saturday but that fixture is in down due to the weather.

Celtic host Ross County on March 31 in the second last fixture before the Premiership split.
