Brendan Rodgers is ready to push the point that Celtic players won’t be part of Scotland’s mid-summer trip to Peru and Mexico.

Shortly before he decided to resign Stewart Regan decided to arrange matches on May 29 and June 2 without consultation with the Board of the SFA.

With Celtic starting next season on July 10/11 anyone going on that trip would have less than a week off before joining Ascetic’s pre-season training.

The playing benefits of going halfway across the world to prepare for European Championship friendlies is debatable with McLeish inheriting the matches after taking over from Gordon Strachan.

Although Scott Brown has retired from international football seven Celtic players have been involved in the Scotland side this season with Rodgers’ focus all on Celtic’s European prospects.

We had a brief chat about it, in terms of the individual players, but I’ll speak to Alex more about that over the course of the next week or so,” the Celtic boss told The Evening Times. “But we’ve had a preliminary discussion about it.

It’s fair say there has been a huge burden on our players this season, mentally and physically. It was a really short turnaround for the majority of them after last season.

There are going to be some who need the recovery and rest. We will speak on that and see what’s going to be best.”

McLeish’s first match in charge will be a friendly against Costa Rica on Friday March 23 at Hampden.

During his time in charge of Rangers (IL) McLeish was given EBT payments of £1.7m which the Supreme Court has now decided was disguised remuneration.
