The quiet decline of Teemu Pukki at Celtic

When he joined Celtic in August 2013 it seemed a safe signing to replace Gary Hooper.

Scoring on his debut away to Hearts seemed to confirm the pedigree of Teemu Pukki but it quickly went downhill for the Finn.

Playing for Celtic takes a certain type of personality, just as quickly it became clear that that aspect was lacking from the former Schalke 04 striker.

After the success of Hooper and Anthony Stokes an arrogance developed among Celtic fans with regard to strikers.

With Neil Lennon’s side dominating at home, strikers coming in from Scunthorpe and Hibs could flourish in a team all geared towards getting the ball into the opposing penalty area.

Unfortunately the 2013/14 Champions League campaign was a sobering experience. After taking 10 points from the group a season earlier a tally of just three was a shock to the system with Pukki going three months between his second and third goals.

Further goals were few and far between, he finished the season with seven to his name- the same total as January signing Leigh Griffiths.

While the Finn flopped, Griffiths embraced playing for Celtic and didn’t doubt his ability to knock other strikers out of the side.

Pukki had a surprise flourish at Murrayfield when he scored twice against KR Reykjavik under new manager Ronny Deila.

There was a suggestion that the new managers Scandinavia ways might get the best out of Pukki but before the transfer window closed he was shipped out to Brondby on loan.

A goal in every third match seemed good enough for the Danes with the loan becoming a permanent move without any mention of a transfer fee.

Pukki has maintained that scoring rate with Brondby but in six matches this season he has still to find the net.

In total the 27-year-old only started 20 matches for Celtic and has a dishonourable place in the lengthy list of strikers that flopped at Celtic with Griffiths the only exception between Stokes and Moussa Dembele.
