Bruno Alves won’t be walking away from the final year of his lucrative Sevco contract.

Last summer’s marquee signing turned out to be a massive flop with the Ibrox side having the worst defence in the top six.

In January Sevco tried to offload Alves to Italian side Benevento but the 36-year-old wasn’t prepared to take a massive pay cut.

Steven Gerrard failed in a bid to bring in Martin Skrtel in from Fenerbahce but the soon to be appointed Ibrox boss can count on Alves.

Speaking to The Sun about his future he said: “I have no plans to finish my career either at club or at country level. I will never retire from Portugal.

I will always make myself available for selection. What motivates me is to be play for the national team and to see them do even better.

I don’t think about getting to 100 caps. I just want to play and help Portugal in any way I can.”

Alves will miss Sevco’s pre-season training due to Portugal’s World Cup commitments but Gerrard will have Young McCrorie and Fabio Cardoso to work with.

The new Ibrox boss is scheduled to start work on June 1 but is unlikely to be impressed by the transfer activity of Mark Allen.

Apart from the out of contract Kenny Miller none of last season’s squad has moved on with Scott Arfield and Allan McGregor the only new signings.
