Jimmy Nicholl has admitted that it would eat away at him if Sevco failed to finish second in the Premiership.
A 1-1 draw last night at Aberdeen leaves the tribute act in third place needing to take something from Sunday’s match at Hibs and hope that Celtic don’t take their foot off the gas against the Dons.
Six years into the journey Sevco are slugging it out in a three way battle for second place with the reality of the situation starting to sink in.
The draw at Aberdeen was achieved while collecting six yellow cards with Sean Goss and Alfredo Morelos lucky to avoid being sent off.
Nicholl has one more match in charge and is hoping to bow out in ‘glory’ with the honour of finishing a distant second to Celtic.
“Character and desire are the words,” he told the Daily Record after the draw at Aberdeen. “That is what you are looking for in players all the time. Whatever has happened has happened in previous games and in the first half.
“There are certain games they go about and I can’t defend them. You can’t defend the two Celtic games. You can’t defend that. You just wonder why but that’s gone and all we’re trying to do is restore a bit of pride.
“That’s all they can do. Restore a bit of pride, win a game of football, which I thought they should’ve done tonight, win on Sunday and hopefully finish second and get into Europe.
“Whatever happens in the summer, happens.
“People look at Rangers as a football club and turn around and say ‘so what if they’re second, what sort of achievement is that?’ But it is.
“Celtic are a way up there at this moment in time so you have to be the best of the rest if you possibly can. It would eat away at me and it would hurt if it didn’t happen.”
Sevco will be without the suspended duo of Young McCrorie and Morelos for the match against Hibs with Graham Dorrans doubtful with a knee injury.
