The SFA have opened a can of worms after deciding to investigate a complaint from Sevco about a magazine comment made by Gary Hughes 12 years ago.

According to a report by STV the incident was discussed at Hampden on Tuesday with an investigation launched.

Time to move on and not wishing to rake over old coals has been the consistent line out of Hampden and Ibrox as the cheating of the past has been ignored and covered up.

For over a decade Rangers (IL) fielded ineligible players in the Scottish Cup with no retrospective action taken.

Officials inside Hampden knew that Barry Ferguson’s registered contract after returning to Rangers (IL) from Blackburn in 2005 was for less than £10,000/week but made no effort to find out if he was being weighed in by other payments.

Hughes’ crime was to refer to the great unwashed at Ibrox in a magazine interview in 2006 which the SFA have decided to investigate.

STV reports

The Scottish FA board convened on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the issue and complaint from a member club.

STV understands the governing body has launched a probe into the comments and whether they are actionable.

And in response to King’s demands to find anyone else on the board was aware of these comments prior to his appointment, and indeed today’s revelations, we believe the investigation will look into all of this.

Gary Hughes is currently on holiday and a statement is expected from the Scottish FA.

While they look into those quotes the SFA may wish to consider the roles played by Andrew Dickson, Alastair Johnston and Dave King in a decade of cheating other member clubs and why all three are still given the red carpet treatment to prowl around Hampden.
