Chris Sutton is looking forward to the next chapters in the Steven Gerrard story.

As the gullible queue up to buy season tickets the new Sevco boss has returned to his Merseyside comfort zone waiting on the funding promises to become reality.

Pedro Caixinha emptied the piggy bank and ran up a £4m debt bringing in the best players in Mexico and Portugal but didn’t hang around long enough to get a sup from the Loving Cup.

On Monday Dave King will host a media conference where funding is expected to be discussed but like his promises to the Takeover Appeal Board no one takes a promise from the South African based criminal seriously.

The transfer market moonbeams have already been launched but Sutton has some words of caution as Gerrard attempts to live up to expectations.

Writing in the Daily Record he asks: “I’ve heard people saying players will want to play for Gerrard but what are they going to pay them with, buttons?

It’s absolute bull***t some of the stuff that has come from down south. Is he going to get Jordan Henderson? Record Sport exclusively revealed Martin Skrtel is a target but again you’re taking ageing players. We thought Bruno Alves would be a good signing.

Recruitment will be extremely important but he has to hit the ground running. I listen to a lot of waffle from down south about him developing players at Rangers and getting closer to Celtic but it doesn’t work like that – second is last.

Warburton came with a big reputation but was demolished. Then Pedro Caixinha was a disaster and Graeme Murty has been eaten up by the job.

Gerrard has rolled the dice big time accepting this job in the current climate.

If he can manage half as good as he played then Rangers just maybe are on to a winner. but he’ll quickly learn it is either triumph or disaster. Welcome to Glasgow.”

Sutton called out Warbuton and Caixinha long before the people noticed, unless an unexpected £40m windfall is heading to Ibrox Gerrard will join the Roll of Losers that also includes Graeme Murty.

Should £40m turn up it’s likely that the three bears and Close Brothers will be looking for at least half of that in return for their soft loans to prop up King.
