Celtic have been linked with a move for Fabian Schar.

The story appears to have originated in Spain where the defender has just suffered relegation from the top flight with Deportivo de la Coruna.

Schar does have a £3.5m release clause in his contract and is unlikely to return to the Spanish Second Division after playing for Switzerland at the World Cup.

While Schar does appear to have the credentials to appeal to Celtic his World Cup involvement would present a major obstacle.

The hoops look like being without Dedryck Boyata for a significant part of what Brendan Rodgers will hope to turn into an eight match Champions League qualifying programme.

With Kris Ajer, Jozo Simunovic, Jack Hendry, Nir Bitton and Marvin Compper around Celtic are reasonably well covered in central defence for the early qualifiers. Any additions are likely to be required just now rather than later in the transfer window.

Schar made the breakthrough with FC Wil 1990 earning a move to Basel where his career really kicked on.

Spells with Hoffenheim and Deportivo have been less successful but after starting for Switzerland against Brazil and being available at £3.5m he is bound to attract a number of offers before the transfer window closes.
