Moussa Dembele looked close to his best as Celtic beat Sparta Prague 1-0 in the final match of their trip to Austria.

The former Fulham striker missed the first two matches of the tour due to a minor knee injury but showed no ill effects in 45 minutes against the Czech side.

Odsonne Edouard was in the starting XI but the former Paris Saint Germain striker popped up in a variety of forward positions while Dembele played straight through the centre.

It was an impressive first half from the hoops as they set the tempo and created chances but the pace dropped in the second half as Sparta pushed for an equaliser.

With the tie against Alashkert just a week away it was clear that the players needed a full 90 minutes with the temperature in Armenia, even with the game kicking off at 8pm local time, sure to be a factor.

The only goal of the game arrived after 18 minutes when Dembele showed all of his ability as he raced onto a long pass from James Forrest, left one defender trailing in his way then fired in a 15 yard shot that the Sparta keeper was pleased to avoid contact with.

The Sparta defence had no answer to the striker’s strength, twice in the closing minutes of the first half Dembele broke through on goal but there was no further scoring.

Ewan Henderson replaced Dembele at the break allowing Edouard to move into the striking position with the substitute playing close by in the ‘Rogic role’.

On the hour mark Craig Gordon was forced into a great double save to preserve Celtic’s lead with the Czech side striking the woodwork in the 83rd minute against substitute keeper Connor Hazard.

Earlier today Mikey Johnston and Scott Sinclair were on target as the hoops beat RW Linz 2-1.

CELTIC: Gordon (Hazard 64); Hendry, Ajer, Simunovic, Tierney; Forrest, Brown, Ntcham (Hendry 64), McGregor; Dembele (Henderson 46), Edouard (McInroy 78)
