Barry Ferguson has fallen for the same hype as Derek Johnstone.

On Friday the Evening Times columnist declared that- without having watched a single match- Steven Gerrard had assembled the best ‘Rangers’ squad in a decade.

So far the Revolution has consisted of TWO transfer fees with the former Liverpool u-18 coach forced to rummage for loan deals and players that are out of contract.

Since returning by Easyjet from their Spanish training camp little has been seen or heard of from Gerrard.

The gullibles however are in full flow with Fergie happy to add to their delusions.

Rangers have signed a lot of players in the last few windows but this time, it’s a different calibre of player they’ve brought in,” the former Clyde boss told the Daily Record.

They’ve played at a good level and I’m impressed by the signings so far. I think it’ll be a different Rangers this year. I don’t want to get carried away – the proof will be in the pudding – but I can sense a different mentality this time.

And there’s a different vibe among the supporters too. It’s difficult not to get over-excited but it looks like we are going in the right direction.”

Next Thursday the real action begins when Sevco face Macedonian side Shkupi in the first qualifying round of the Europa League.

Getting through four qualifying rounds looks an impossible task but Ferguson has already set his sights on an even higher level of football.

He added: “For me, a club like Rangers should be in the Champions League. But for now it’s about getting through the qualifying rounds of the Europa League.

Of course, there will be difficult games because you go into some of them blind. You don’t know much about the teams you’re playing against but Rangers must get into the group stages. The Progres defeat was an ?embarrassment.

Take nothing away ?from them but Rangers should be ?beating them. As a player you have to work harder then your opponent. But in that tie it looked to me like Rangers didn’t want it as much as Progres.”
