Brendan Rodgers has revealed that it is 2.5 kilos or you are out to be in his squad.

Aside from the seven goals the most striking aspect of the wins over Alashkert and Standard Liege was the level of fitness.

Already it appears that the players are fit with only a little extra match sharpness required, by the time they face Rosenborg or Valur next week the Celtic players will be firing on all cylinders.

There is no short, sharp solution to fitness, it’s not something that you pick up on a ten day crash course in sunny Spain.

Rodgers laid down the law two years ago, not with headlines about Irn Bru, chips and ketchup but by example with the players reaping the rewards in terms of win bonuses and medals.

Explaining the environment that new players now discover the Celtic boss told The Scotsman: “The beauty here for Lewis and guys who are new to it is to see that straight away you’re judged to a higher standard at the biggest clubs and you have to feel that on the very first day you walk in.

If you feel that and embrace it then you will improve. The players also know now that is they come in and they are two and a half kilos over what their best weight is then won’t train with the squad. It’s very simple; they can train but it won’t be with the first team.

So that means they’ve got to keep an eye on how they come back and we now have players coming back who have lost kilos and are in really good condition.

Football is science and art. For me, it’s an art but what you can’t deny is the science of the game is absolutely vital as is the fusion between both, especially when you play a technical game.

If you play a high-level technical game and you’re not fit then the first thing that goes is your technique. In order to play with intensity and aggression you need to be super-fit.”

Celtic’s next test is the return leg against Alashkert on Wednesday quickly followed by the second qualifying round against Valur or Rosenborg.
