Steven Gerrard has pleaded with Dave King to buy him a new central defender.

Sunday’s 3-3 draw with Motherwell exposed the myth of the iron curtain Ibrox defence as Motherwell bulldozed their way to goal.

Ahead of their visit to Celtic the Ibrox backline has lost four goals in the SPFL compared to just two by the hoops.

Gerrard went public with his need for a left sided central defender after the friendly against Wigan last month but that plea has been ignored by the Ibrox money men.

After the 3-3 draw at Fir Park the Sevco boss was quick to shoot down rumours that he was in the market to bring in more attacking options.

Asked about bringing in Ryan Gauld Gerrard told the Daily Record: “Nothing. I’ve been asked about Nathan Dyer and there’s nothing in that either.

Hopefully we can get a centre-back in. I’m not sure if it’s loan or permanent – could be either.”

Earlier in the summer Sevco were linked with a fantasy bid of £3m for Millwall defender Jake Cooper.

So far Gerrard’s transfer fee deals that amounted to signing two players from Brighton, two Croatians and the £325,000 transfer of Kyle Lafferty from Hearts. Close to £2m was secured by selling Josh Windass to Wigan.

Following the draw with Motherwell Sevco are sitting in fourth place and are likely to be in the bottom half of the table when they kick off against Celtic on Sunday.
