The key to Benkovic joining Celtic

Since Jozo Simunovic was signed from Dinamo Zagreb in 2015 Celtic have regularly been linked with Filip Benkovic.

With five days left in the current transfer window and major problems in central defence the hoops have again been credited with an interest in the 21-year-old defender.

Dinamo Zagreb picked up a transfer fee of £13m from Leicester City in the summer but with Claude Puel’s side starting the EPL season in impressive form Benkovic is still waiting to make his debut for the 2016 title winners.

With a five year contract signed in the summer Leicester have plenty of confidence in Benkovic, sending him to Celtic is bound to be of interest even if the type of game he’d be playing in is less demanding than he will get if he is thrown into the Leicester defence.

Key to any transfer is Brendan Rodgers.

Despite the nonsense that followed the Charly Musonda loan deal English clubs trust the former Liverpool boss with players.

If there is a player in there Rodgers will develop that player, look at Stuart Armstrong and Dedryck Boyata for how the Celtic boss can bring out the best in players.

Benkovic is an entirely different prospect, his career hasn’t dipped but after two solid seasons in the Croatian League he doesn’t want his career to stall.

Working with Rodgers and a campaign livened up by Europa League football should appeal to the player and his club, Celtic certainly need a boost in that area of the park even if it’s only for one season.
