A couple of hours after Brendan Rodgers dismissed any prospect of taking the Aston Villa job the Daily Record has resumed normal service.

‘Aston Villa will ask Celtic for permission to talk to Brendan Rodgers about becoming their new boss on Monday’ is the introduction to the main article on the sports pages of the Record website.

Nothing is ever definite in football but the Irishman gave as close as you are likely to get to denying interest in the Villa Park vacancy.

Taking on that job would be career suicide- just ask Roberto di Mateo, Remi Garde, Tim Sherwood, Paul Lambert or Alex McLeish what it does for your career to have Villa on your CV.

Rodgers is certainly sending out mixed messages in his Celtic media appearances with yesterday typical of recent events.

Before the 6-0 win at St Johnstone he seemed distant as he complained about his bloated squad and how players out of favour are bound not to be happy.

Afterwards he was loving the job and the challenge that this season was presenting him with at Celtic.

Perhaps Villa might want to switch their interest across Glasgow to an emerging young manager who has taken his club to sixth position in the SPFL after eight matches.
