James Forrest is set to return to action later this month.

The winger walked off McDairmid Park with 12 minutes left to play leaving Celtic with 10 men after feeling a twinge in his hamstring while opening the scoring for Celtic against St Johnstone.

Forrest has been free of hamstring problems for almost three years but news of another injury sparked fears among Celtic fans that he could be facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

But SunSport understands scan results showed the injury is not as bad as first feared.

Forrest hasn’t ruled out being available for next week’s Valencia Europa League match – if treatment goes to plan.

But Brendan Rodgers is unlikely to take any major risks with his fitness, given the winger’s previous history of muscle injuries.

If his recovery is on schedule Forrest could be back in action on February 24 when Celtic are at home to Motherwell in the SPFL with the Valencia double header and a trip to Rugby Park in-between too much to ask for.

The 27-year-old will definitely miss the home matches against Hibs and St Johnstone with Brendan Rodgers having a couple of attacking options to replace Forrest.

Oliver Burke and Mikey Johnston can both play on the right flank or the formation could be altered to play two through the centre with Burke and Timo Weah capable of fulfilling those roles.
