Scott Bain’s promotion to first choice Celtic keeper seems certain to be confirmed tomorrow when he faces Valencia in the Europa League.

Twelve months ago he was third choice behind the injured Craig Gordon as Dorus de Vries was selected to play against Zenit St Petersburg.

The Dutchman survived a howler in the return leg, remaining as first choice until the March visit to Ibrox threw Bain a highly unlikely debut. He hasn’t looked back.

This season he was handed the gloves for the Betfred Cup and picked up a winners medal with just one goal lost, away to Partick Thistle.

When Bain was in goals for the Scottish Cup tie against Airdrie United no one really took notice, when he retained his place for the SPFL match against St Mirren it was a significant step.

Celtic haven’t lost a goal in 2019 with Bain a major part of that success as the defence changes on a weekly basis, the recent win away to St Johnstone was completed with the recognised four first choice defenders.

During television coverage of the Scottish Cup tie against St Johnstone John Hartson floated the idea that Gordon may return to face Valencia based on his big match experience.

All the signs point towards Bain retaining his place, few would bet against another clean sheet for the collection.
