Neil Doncaster wants to reduce the SPFL Premiership from 12 clubs to 10.

The top flight has consisted of 12 clubs since season 2000/01 which was part of the agreement between the SPL and SFL when the new ‘elite’ was established in 1998.

Although the end of season split can create fixture anomalies most fans, players and managers agree that 11 regular opponents is far better than just nine.

With a play-off system now in place the 15th best team last season- Livingston- had a route into the top flight with the West Lothian side negotiating the play-off system and having a brief stint in the top six of the top flight.

Keeping decent access open to clubs like Livingson, Partick Thistle, St Mirren, Falkirk and others prevents the SPFL from going stale.

In a rare media interview Doncaster tells i-news: “Were we able to move to a 10 team league, that would make the Ladbrokes Premiership even more competitive than it is at the moment. It’s about being best playing best, week in, week out. However it’s very difficult to go down from 12 to 10 teams; you need two clubs that are willing to make the big sacrifice for the greater good.”

Any move to a 10 team top flight would require a majority vote across all four divisions and is virtually assured 100% opposition from clubs currently outwith the Premiership.
