Marco Rose is the latest name to be strongly linked with the vacant manager’s job at Celtic.
The odds on the RB Salzburg manager becoming the permanent boss of Celtic have come down to 5/1 but the market on ‘next manager’ is one of the most liquid around with a few media articles or bets being placed likely to trigger a significant price cut.
An impressive case can be made for Rose based on two appearances against Celtic in the Europa League with RB Salzburg about to face Napoli for a place in the last eight of the competition after sweeping full points from their group.
Rose has worked his way through the ranks at RB Salzburg over the last six years since starting out at u-16 level.
As well as their impressive Europa League record Salzburg are cursing towards another Austrian title with an 11 point lead after 20 matches.
The big question mark over Rose is how much is the 42-year-old German responsible for the success of Salzburg who seem to be a very well run club rather than one getting dragged up by an over-performing coach.
Rose took over first team duties in June 2017, winning last season’s title by 13 points from Sturm Graz and reaching the semi-finals of the Europa League where they lost out to Marseilles.
Perhaps his most impressive achievement was winning the UEFA Youth League in 2016/17 for Salzburg. They emerged from the Champions route then saw off Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Atlético Madrid and Barcelona before beating Benfica in the final.
He is certainly an option worth considering, it would be negligent not to make contact, but if Neil Lennon delivers the two trophies on offer a difficult job could be made impossible if anyone is to replace the current caretaker.
