Celtic make their move for midfield target

|

Celtic have apparently opened talks with Motherwell over the transfer of David Turnbull but the report in the Daily Record waters things down by claiming that the champions only asked ‘to be kept informed’.

The midfielder broke into the Motherwell side last season and had an outstanding time from Christmas to finish as top scorer in Stephen Robinson’s side with 14 goals.

That has prompted interest from England with Motherwell getting Turnbull nailed down in January onto a new contract that runs until June 2021.

It seems unlikely that the midfielder will get anywhere near to completing that contract with the tone of the Record story suggesting that he will be sold this summer.

They state:

Celtic have stepped up their move for Motherwell prodigy David Turnbull by opening direct talks with the Fir Park club.

Record Sport understands Scotland’s champions have lodged an official inquiry with Fir Park chief executive Alan Burrows and asked to be kept informed of any developments surrounding the 19-year-old’s future as a host of English clubs prepare to enter the race.

Motherwell’s record transfer fee is the £1.75m that they received from Celtic for Phil O’Donnell in 1994 with James McFadden sold for just less than that figure to Everton.

Midfield isn’t really a transfer priority for Celtic but after losing out on John McGinn last summer they will be wary of making the same mistakes.

Many Celtic supporters would be happy to see Ewan Henderson given his chance in midfield, perhaps sending him on loan to Motherwell for a season could sweeten the deal although cold hard cash from the EPL will be hard to resist.

After making his breakthrough Turnbull has been tipped to win international honours next season- which will require him to be playing regular first team football.
