Injury worries haunt Celtic midfielder

Tom Rogic was left out of the Celtic party that flew to Austria yesterday with the midfielder suffering from niggly injuries.

Fitness has long been the biggest concern for the midfielder with at one stage the Australian rarely able to last beyond the 70 minute mark.

Australian’s are usually noted for having higher levels of fitness but with his range of skills, knack for finding the net from distance and other attributes it seems that Rogic has been sold short on that national attribute.

According to this analysis from Celtic By Numbers Rogic’s total game time over the last three seasons amounts to less than 30 games a season.

In January he picked up a hand injury on international duty at the Asian Cup, when he returned to Celtic there was a knee injury that required surgery, when he came on as a substitute in the Glasgow derby at the end of March he looked well off the pace.

A Hampden goal against Aberdeen, again, in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup, hinted at a return to form but so far that has been his only goal of 2019.

Touching on Turnbull and covering his absence from the squad in Austria the Daily Record reports:

Celtic want the 19-year-old on board as soon as possible with Rogic yet to take part in full pre-season training. The playmaker was not on international duty earlier this month and reported back to Lennoxtown last week but he didn’t take part in full workouts as he looks to finally shrug off the injury problems that blighted his last campaign.

With Olivier Ntcham still on international duty and Scott Brown recovering from his end of season toe operation Celtic will be a little short on midfield options for tomorrow’s friendly against Pinkafeld.
