Wallace Duffy is close to signing for St Johnstone.

The 20-year-old was a regular in last season’s Celtic reserve side but wasn’t offered a contract to stay on at the club.

Naturally a central defender, Duffy also made a number of appearances at right-back, a role he shared with Lewis Bell and Tony Ralston

The Sun reports:

ST JOHNSTONE are set to complete the signing of Celtic kid Wallace Duffy.

Saints boss Tommy Wright has been on the hunt for a right-back to challenge Richard Foster next season.

In the second half of last season Duffy came on strongly but never featured in any first team squads with Mikael Lustig, Jeremy Toljan and Cristian Gamboa ahead of him for a place as well as Ralston.

Getting a contract offer from St Johnstone however should give him a decent chance of first team football with Tommy Wright keeping a tight first team squad backed up by younger players.

St Johnstone were one of the first clubs to pull out of the Reserve League for next season, a decision that has been followed by Aberdeen and Hibs.

Celtic have yet to make any announcement on whether they will take part in the Reserve League, the biggest complaint about last season’s competition was that it only provided 17 matches over a 10 month period.

Released Celtic keeper Reece Willkinson has been signed by Airdrie, Regan Hendry has joined Raith Rovers
