Celtic have been linked with a £2.5m bid for Romaine Sawyers.

According to the Daily Record the hoops have turned their attention to the Brentford midfielder after missing out on David Turnbull.

The Motherwell teenager was on course to become Neil Lennon’s first signing until an issue was flagged up in a medical that required immediate surgery and a lengthy lay off.

Record Sport understands highly-rated Sawyers is under consideration with the club having first scouted the ?St Kitts and Nevis star back in 2015 when he was producing outstanding performances for Wallsall.

Sawyers subsequently moved to the Bees but his stock has continued to rise through three years at Griffin Park and he is now approaching his peak at the age of 27.

The midfielder’s in the final year of his contract and, while he’s also attracting interest from Stoke, he’s still available at an affordable price after Aston Villa’s promotion to the Premier League ended their potential interest.

Sawyers is represented by Beswicks Sports where Lewis Morgan is also a client.

Unless the prospect of playing in European football is overwhelming it’s unlikely to see Sawyers moving to Celtic if there is interest in him from Stoke, with a year left on his Brentford deal the 27-year-old is firmly in control of his destiny.

While transfer activity continues on a number of fronts Neil Lennon is in Sweden with signing a right-back the immediate priority.

Tony Ralston is the only recognised right-back available for the Champions League qualifiers against FK Sarajevo with the first leg coming on Tuesday.

Two wild card signings can be made before 11pm on Sunday but it’s unlikely that anyone would be pitched into their debut after just a couple of days at the club.
