Olivier Ntcham has surely put the nail in the coffin of his Celtic career by telling L’Equipe of the flattering interest in him from Marseilles where his career would blossom.

In November the midfielder signed a new extended contract but has now admitted that he is disappointed that a move to Porto last summer fell through.

After a stunning debut season in 2017/18 Ntcham rarely recaptured that form last season and was out of action for two lengthy spells with hamstring problems.

Players need club permission to give interviews at any time with the former Manchester City and Genoa midfielder well aware of the message being sent out in his interview with the respected French publisher.

“Games came one after another but with respect to my opponents, if the level isn’t high, you don’t progress. I was really disappointed not to have gone to Porto last summer.

“What could be the perfect stage for me? A big championship: Germany, France, Spain – coming back to France would be something very, very good.

“The interest of the Marseille? It is flattering. It is a very big club with very big support. If I went to Marseille, I would blossom, I have always signed for clubs with lots of fans.”

Celtic are believed to be looking for £15m for Ntcham who helped France to reach the semi-finals of the u21 European Championships last month.

Interest in David Turnbull and Romain Sawyers would suggest that Celtic are looking ahead with plans to replace the midfielder who cost £4.5m in July 2017.
