Manchester City have had an offer for Jose Cifuentes rejected.

Neil Lennon confirmed Celtic’s interest in the Ecuador midfielder a fortnight ago but with City on the scene it seemed unlikely that he would be moving to Glasgow.

According to Transfermarkt Cifuentes is currently playing for CD America but a report from Ecuador claims that Universidad Catolica have rejected the offer from City.

U Católica did not accept the City Football Group’s offer by José Cifuentes. After the transfer, the pretensions of the club quiteño are higher than offered. It was time for Cifu, after a great World Cup and an international offer with projection.

Cifuentes was one of Ecuador’s most impressive players at the u-19 World Cup Finals in Poland, which has the above tweet acknowledges has pushed up his value.

City have just over a week left in their transfer window to apply for a work permit and get the deal completed including an approved club for the player to go on loan to.

Celtic wouldn’t be sending the 20-year-old out on loan but do have a problem in giving young players worthwhile game time.

After the almost pointless 17 fixture Reserve League last season the hoops have opted out of this season’s competition but that leaves a big void as they attempt to provide players like Luca Connell, Ewan Henderson, Karamoko Dembele and Vakoun Bayo with match time to progress their first team prospects.
