Celtic fans reacted with delight to the news that Steven Gerrard is staying on at Ibrox.
For almost two years they have been hearing about the impact that the Liverpool legend is about to have but still the trophies keep stacking up in the east end of Glasgow.
Saturday’s Scottish Cup defeat at Hearts ended Gerrard’s most realistic hope of lifting a trophy this season with Hearts joining Aberdeen, Hibs and Celtic in the semi-final draw.
His Ibrox reign has been full of false dawns, most famously winning the December Glasgow derby before collapsing on all fronts after the winter break.
The other main feature has been blaming players for defeat with no sign of taking responsibility. In both recent defeats to Hearts at Tynecastle Gerrard has claimed that he struggled to recognise the players that he had trained and coached for the match.
Tomorrow night Hamilton Accies visit Ibrox on SPFL duty but it’s two matches next week that will test Gerrard’s resolve to bring trophies to Ibrox.
Hosting Bayer Leverkusen and Celtic within three days will test Gerrard’s managerial ability in full with his squad likely to be without Ryan Jack and Scott Arfield for those matches.
?? SG: I am all in, I signed up to something here and I knew there would be real setbacks and this is when the club needs me most to stay on, fight and push forward on the progress we have made in a lot of areas whilst learning to ensure the mistakes don’t happen again.
