Dougie Imrie has been named as the former SPFL Premiership player arrested but not charged in relation to match fixing allegations.

The 36-year-old retired from playing at the end of last season and is now in charge of the club’s u-18 side.

SFA rules prevent anyone employed at any club from betting on football matches with an SFA investigation bound to look at the evidence uncovered by Police Scotland.

Earlier this year Accies boss Brian Rice was given a five match touchline ban after betting on matches. After opening up about his gambling problem Rice claimed that 80% of footballers were involved with gambling.

The Sun reports:

EX-Hamilton ace Dougie Imrie was arrested by cops probing alleged match-fixing claims, we can reveal.

The former Accies skipper – who is now involved in coaching at the club – was quizzed by detectives investigating suspicious betting patterns.

Imrie, 36, was later released “pending further inquiries” by cops based at Scottish Crime Campus in Gartcosh, Lanarkshire. It is understood the specialist fraud investigators are probing claims up to eight players and staff members have placed bets involving a Premiership club.

The probe is said to be focusing on bets placed on specific events, including players being booked during matches. Accies veteran Imrie – who retired from playing at the end of last season – was nicked by officers last month.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “A 36-year-old man was arrested on February 28 in connection with a reported incident relating to gambling in sport. He has been released pending further inquiries.”

Last season in successive matches away to Kilmarnock, Aberdeen and St Johnsone Imrie was booked in all three matches and red carded at Pittodrie. In 34 appearances he was booked seven times and sent off once.

In October 2017 Accies revealed that they had been victims of a £1m cyber sting, in February 2018 they claimed to be going to sue Royal Bank of Scotland over the £1m loss.

Greg Docherty was transferred from Hamilton to Ibrox in January 2018 for an undisclosed fee.
