Jeremie Frimpong was the very popular choice as Celtic’s Young Player of the Year.

Twelve months ago he was just another prospect among dozens at Manchester City’s Academy but a summer switch to Celtic put him firmly in the spotlight.

Frimpong arrived under the dubious ‘project signing’ tag but after one week at training Neil Lennon realised that his instinct had uncovered someone a bit different.

After watching an Academy match between Celtic and Manchester City Lennon put the wheels in motion to see if Frimpong was available. City agreed a cut price move for the Dutch born kid with a healthy but unknown sell-on clause inserted in the four- year contract.

His debut was against Partick Thistle in the Betfred Cup towards the end of September, by the time the final came around in December he was an essential part of the side.

A red card put something of a dampener on his first cup final but a winners’ medal made up for that while the phrase ‘Oh My Days’ was born in the post-match celebrations.

Frimpong will start next season as Celtic’s first choice right-back and wing-back with every chance of many more personal and team honours heading his way.
