Celtic have been named by the President of Wolfsberger as having made an offer for Shon Weissman.

The news emerged shortly before it was announced that Leigh Griffiths won’t be part of the Celtic squad travelling to France for three pre-season friendlies.

Wolfsberger signed Weissman on a two year contract last summer but after a prolific season at home and in the Europa League they will have to sell him this summer or miss out on a windfall.

Celtic were first linked with the Israeli striker in May, on the eve of the new season news of an offer puts further pressure on Griffiths although there is also likely to be offers coming in for Odsonne Edouard.

Wolfsberger president Dietmar Rieglar told Kleine Zeitung:

As you already know, he wants to go to Germany or England. Here, however, we still have no inquiries. Offers came from Russia or Scotland, among others, from Glasgow Celtic.

Because of the pandemic everything is different this year. The seasons in Germany have now ended. The clubs know where they will play in the coming season. I think the next few days will be interesting for Shon.

At the age of 24 with 30 goals from 31 league appearances and two Europa League goals from six matches Weissman perfectly fits Celtic’s transfer profile.

How genuine the offer quoted by Rieglar is is difficult to determine, agents claiming to represent clubs are bound to be in contact with Wolfsberger who know that the more interest there is the higher the fee they can expect.

The Austrian side paid Maccabi Haifa £450,000 for Wismann a year ago, full career details are on Transfermarkt.

Last night it was widely reported from a Celtic statement that Griffiths would be training this week at Lennoxtown while the first team squad is in France for matches against Nice, Lyon and Paris Saint Germain.
