Jermain Defoe has pleaded with Ibrox fans to respect BLM and players taking the knee.

The former England striker spoke out in support of footballers taking the knee when the EPL resumed, saying that he hoped it would be adopted in Scotland.

Steven Gerrard’s side returned to action over the weekend but the club Twitter account was swamped with abusive comments when they shared images of players taking the knee.

Connor Goldson tried to appeal to that element of the Ibrox support but was met with abuse with some fans wanting him to quit the club for supporting ‘a far left Marxist movement’.

It seems that Defoe and others have had their eyes opened about the mindset of many of their ‘supporters’ with the striker explaining to The Sun:

It’s a powerful message. Everyone else has been doing it, which is really good, as we have this platform as footballers. The game is so important all over the world and everyone is watching.

So we need to use that platform and support this powerful movement. You get different opinions. Some people might think we shouldn’t be doing it but it’s so nice to see everyone do it.

You look at what’s happened this year, the number of people losing their lives, all that suffering, then the Black Lives Matter movement. These messages are so powerful

On Wednesday night Motherwell visit Ibrox for a Closed Doors friendly, Defoe will find out the level of support that he has from his employers by the decision over whether or not they ‘take the knee’.
