Michael Stewart was in the spotlight last night as he returned to the Sportscene studio to give his verdict on Sunday’s matches.

The former Hearts midfielder fell foul of BBC Scotland bosses last season when he highlighted the role of James Traynor in shaping the media with his role within the state broadcaster marginalised since then.

Hipster Steven Thompson has been elevated to presenting Saturday Sportscene while his former colleague is on a rota for appearances on the weekend shows.

Bobby Madden’s performance at Fir Park was the main talking point. The Lanarkshire based referee was razor sharp to award two handball penalties to the visitors but was reluctant to award traditional penalties when Motherwell players were fouled in the penalty box.

Most pundits would shy away from stating the obvious but focussing on the first penalty awarded, Stewart said:

What’s ‘unnatural’? This is the thing. Bevis Mugabi’s movement there is completely natural.

He’s tried to move his arm back in towards his body, the ball strikes it and he’s given a penalty against it.

Park all that to one side, Rangers deserved to win this game, there’s no question about that.

But these incidents that we’re looking at, for me, were wrong from Bobby Madden even with the new law, which I think is absolute nonsense. You could still argue these are not penalties.
