Neil Lennon has delivered a brilliant reply to the latest prediction of doom and gloom from Charlie Nicholas.

Writing in his column in The Express the former Arsenal striker claimed that Celtic had taken the cheap options through the transfer window, adding that their city rivals had made better deals.

Most Celtic fans are pleased with the way that the squad has been strengthened while at the same time managing to hold on to big name players despite so much uncertainty over finances in the year ahead.

Vasilias Barkas, David Turnbull and Albia Ajeti have been signed on permanent deals while Shane Duffy, Moi Elyounoussi and Diego Laxalt have been brought in on loan to fill key positions.

None of these moves met with Nicholas’ approval but Lennon hit straight back, telling The Sun:

If we had signed Messi and Ronaldo, Charlie still would have found fault with it. He’s been negative about the club for years. Charlie doesn’t think for me, he doesn’t speak for me.

Nicholas recently lost his role on Soccer Saturday with Sky Sports which has greatly reduced his media profile.

While spending the best part of £15m on transfer fees Celtic haven’t brought in any money from selling players despite raising more than £50m from the sales of Moussa Dembele, Stuart Armstrong and Kieran Tierney during the two previous summer windows.
