AC Milan seem determined to sign Kris Ajer with the Norwegian having 18 months left on his Celtic contract.

Reports of interest from the San Siro first emerged last spring- since then the two clubs have faced each other in the Europa League and concluded a loan deal to send Diego Laxalt to Glasgow.

Although not at his best in the Europa League ties, Ajer was one of the few Celtic players to emerge from that campaign with minimal damage to his reputation, over the course of a horrendous season he is clearly Celtic’s best defender.

While Celtic have crashed through Lockdown AC Milan are currently in top spot in Serie A and on course, at least, for a long awaited return to the Champions League.

Like other well run clubs they are operating with one eye towards next season with their interest in Ajer still very much alive according to Calcio Mercato who report:

An old goal for the defence of Milan is back in vogue: according to Corriere dello Sport , the Rossoneri are monitoring the situation of Kristoffer Ajer , a Norwegian from Celtic. The possible negotiation could be facilitated by the inclusion of the Laxalt card in the deal.

Whether Celtic are interested in a permanent move for Laxalt is less certain. Like Ajer his current contract runs until June 2022 with little prospect of Celtic being able to match his AC Milan salary.

After catching the eye initially at Celtic Laxalt’s performances have become increasingly erratic with little sign that his main strength is in defending.

When you add in the uncertainty over Neil Lennon’s future it points to any Ajer deal being a straight move for the Norwegian without Laxalt being used as a makeweight.
