Celtic made heavy weather of a 2-1 win over Motherwell with a stoppage time goal-line clearance from Diego Laxalt securing the points.

For 65 minutes there was lots to enjoy about the performance as Celtic pushed forward from all areas but once Alan Campbell pulled a goal back the complexion of the game changed.

Motherwell pitched balls into the heart of the Celtic defence and almost escaped with a point that they’d never have guessed at when an hour had been played.

Stephen Welsh headed in his first Celtic goal from after two minutes from a David Turnbull corner with the former Motherwell midfielder dominating the first half. In one early incident he took a pass, flicked the ball up then fired in a 25 yard shot that worried Liam Kelly.

Five minutes into the second half Odsonne Edouard took a ball 20 yards from goal, created a yard of space then drilled a low shot into the corner of the net.

Celtic created three or four chances to get the third goal but it came at the other end in the 66th minute when Campbell’s shot took a deflection and flew over Bain.

The last 10 minutes were pretty painful viewing, especially for Ismaila Soro who was back-heeled in the stomach by a grounded Devante Cole. In keeping with the standards that we expect referee Nick Walsh took no action.
