Celtic are in line for an invite into a new look British League as part of the fall out from the short lived European Super League fall out.

English football has been rocked by the news that six clubs had signed up 23 year contracts to a new rebel set up and although resignations were lodged within 48 hours of launch the fall out could be far reaching.

These type of stories surface from time to time but tonight it comes from the highly experienced Sun journalist Martin Lipton who wouldn’t have been chasing an ‘Old Firm’ angle.

It seems that some far reaching changes are in line for English football but inviting in clubs from Scotland would be the most drastic change of all.

Tonight The Sun reports:

RANGERS and Celtic are wanted to join a British League – as part of the fall-out of the failed Euro breakaway plot.

While England’s Big Six led the humiliating retreat from the Super League debacle, they remain convinced reform of the Premier League is essential. Top of the list is an offer to the Old Firm clubs to move south to a new-look league.

And unlike the Super League shambles, which was condemned across the game, it is likely an enlarged Premier League including Gers and Celts would be BACKED by Fifa, Uefa and the UK Government.

The Old Firm could grab a lucrative slice of the Premier League cake, while their inclusion would also see a spike in interest from fans across the world, as well as sponsors and broadcasters.

One club source south of the border said: “Whether or not the European Super League was going to happen, we all feel the Premier League has to be changed and improved. It is time we opened it up to Rangers and Celtic. That would make sense for everyone.”

The two Glasgow clubs have a strained relationship with Scottish football with much of the frustration due to the tiny Broadcasting deals available compared to the riches south of the border.

Any British League would require the approval of the SFA which is unlikely unless a substantial sum of money is ploughed into the Scottish game.
